A TIN (Tax Identification Number) is a free 10-digit number from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). You need it to register a business, pay taxes, transfer a vehicle, get a trading licence or bid for tenders.
How to get an instant TIN (with a NIN)
If you have a National ID Number (NIN), URA issues your TIN instantly:
- Go to ura.go.ug and open TIN registration – Individual.
- Enter your NIN and personal details (they are checked against NIRA).
- Fill in your contact details, address and source of income.
- Submit. Your TIN is generated immediately and sent to your email.
Cost: free.
Without a NIN
Foreigners and those without a NIN fill in an online application form and template, which URA staff then verify. You can also visit any URA office or One Stop Centre.
2026 update: link your NIN to your TIN
On 21 May 2026 URA issued a public notice requiring all taxpayers to update their registration details and link their NIN. Log in to the URA portal to update your profile.
How to find a forgotten TIN
There is no public TIN lookup. Check your original registration email, log in to the URA portal, or visit a URA office with your National ID.
