Why fuel prices went up in 2026
- Excise duty: an extra UGX 200 per litre took effect on 1 July 2026.
- Weaker shilling: the shilling fell from about UGX 3,790 to over 4,000 per US dollar between September and October 2026, briefly touching 4,500 – fuel is imported and paid for in dollars.
- Global oil prices: conflict in the Middle East pushed up energy costs.
